The University of North Carolina at Asheville (known for short as UNC Asheville) is a public liberal arts college and a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges located in Asheville, North Carolina. It is the designated liberal arts institution in the University of North Carolina System. UNC Asheville was founded in 1927 as Buncombe County Junior College. It adopted its current name in 1969 upon becoming part of the University of North Carolina System. It is the designated public liberal arts university within that system, and has been classified as a Liberal Arts I institution since 1992. UNCA has over 200 full-time faculty members and an enrollment of approximately 3,500 students. It offers thirty-two baccalaureate programs and a master's degree in liberal arts.

A doctoral/research intensive university, UNC Charlotte is the fourth largest of the 16 institutions within the University of North Carolina system and the largest institution of higher education in the Charlotte region. It is the only doctoral degree granting institution serving the Charlotte region. EPIC provides education and training to a diverse group of people in all stages of life so that they are able to participate fully in the cyberinfrastructure community as developers, users, and leaders.

The Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory, or HASTAC ("Haystack") is a consortium of humanists, artists, scientists, and engineers from the universities and other institutions dedicated to promoting creative uses of technology. HASTAC members work to develop innovative computing and information systems that support interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and arts and that stretch the possibilities and applications of computational technologies.

Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery (LEAD) is a National Science Foundation Large Information Technology Research (ITR) project that is creating an integrated, scalable cyberinfrastructure for mesoscale meteorology research and education. LEAD's goal is to develop an IT framework that can accommodate the real time, on-demand, and dynamically-adaptive needs of mesoscale weather research, including high-volume data sets and streams, multiple complex models and data assimilation systems.

MIMD Lattice Computation (MILC) Collaboration

The MILC Collaboration is an international research group that uses lattice gauge theory calculations to solve fundamental problems in particle and nuclear physics. The group aims to understand the physical phenomena described by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and to make precision calculations of the theory's predictions. Their work requires computationally-intensive simulations within the framework of lattice gauge theory in an effort to better understand the behaviors of the most fundamental particles in nature.

The Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Network works to build a cyberinfrastructure that serves a diverse community of scientists, researchers and IT administrators. The consortium is committed to linking the best faculty, students, and staff at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with top research institutions to engage in cutting-edge technology development and scientific discovery. The consortium includes 60 MSIs from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions and Tribal Colleges and Universities.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is an agency under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and under the Department of Commerce (DOC). It has been in existence since 1870 and it is the sole United States OFFICIAL voice for issuing warnings during life-threatening weather situations, such as thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, winter weather, tsunamis, and climate events. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community.

The SURA Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction (SCOOP) program is helping to create a national Integrated Ocean Observing System by providing the information infrastructure that will unite the coastal science community and create new ways of doing coastal and marine science. SCOOP partners focus on data integration to aid research on storm surges, wind waves, and surface currents, and emphasize predicting and visualizing phenomena that cause damage and inundation of coastal regions during severe storms and hurricanes.

The State Climate Office of North Carolina is the primary source for NC weather and climate information. Located on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University, the State Climate Office (SCO) is actively involved in all aspects of climate research, education, and extension services. The SCO is an extension of the University of North Carolina system and is supported by the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS), the NC Agricultural Research Service, and the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) in an effort to further understand the details and impacts of climate on industries and citizens in North Carolina.

TeraGrid is an open infrastructure for scientific discovery that brings together high-end resources across the U.S. to create an integrated, persistent computational resource. Deployed in 2004, TeraGrid offers the open science and engineering research communities more than 40 teraflops of computing power, nearly 2 petabytes of rotating storage, and specialized data analysis and visualization resources located at eight partner sites. In addition to resource providers, TeraGrid partners include Science Gateway sites, which develop common interfaces and protocols that enable entire research communities to easily access TeraGrid resources.

TUCASI is a collaborative effort of Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It promotes non-profit research and educational programs that utilize and enhance the resources of the three Triangle area universities.
