Visualization and Collaborative Environments

The real world happens in three dimensions and any technologies that help to recreate the full dimensions and interactivity of real life contribute to understanding and discovery. RENCI’s Visualization and Collaborative Environments Group explores how technology can make scientific problem solving, long-distance collaboration, and even artistic expression more meaningful. The group focuses on:

  • Presenting scientific data and other phenomena visually. These visualizations turn vast quantities of large-scale, time-dependent data into visual simulations of complicated processes, such as the interactions of proteins that play a role in causing disease or the changes in atmospheric conditions over time as a tropical storm develops into a hurricane.
  • Exploring how electronic environments—from portals on the Web to virtual worlds such as Second Life—can help people access information quickly, extract meaning from that information, and interact productively with colleagues and collaborators around the world.
