 Research Computing: Getting Started

UNC Research Computing makes a number of computing resources available for researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill. Among these are a 128-processor SGI Altix (Cedar/Cypress); a 4160-processor Dell Linux cluster (Topsail); a 352-processor Beowulf Linux cluster (Emerald); four 16-processor IBM P575 machines and a 32-processor IBM P690 (accessed through Emerald).

An [ http://help.unc.edu/?id=1959 ] Onyen is required to get an account on any of the Research Computing servers. If you already have an Onyen, you can request access to these servers by visiting the [ https://onyen.unc.edu/ ] Onyen Services page and selecting Subscribe to Services . Accounts on these servers are available to faculty, staff, and graduate students. Undergraduate students needing access should follow the instructions in the Research Accounts section of the [ http://www.unc.edu/policy/onyenpol.html#Heading11 ] Onyen Policy document. At this time, requests for accounts on the large Dell cluster (Topsail) should be sent to . Note that this resource is intended for use for very large parallel jobs. CPU hours on Topsail will be awarded through a peer-reviewed proposal and allocation process.
